Wonder Women

August 21 and September 4

In August and September, "Microtopia as a community platform" continued to broaden and strengthen. In addition to fostering graffiti art, educational programs, and ad-hoc play, Microtopia has now hosted the first two sessions of WONDER WOMEN, a newly-launched women's leadership and mutual support group founded and led by Lorinda Moore. At Microtopia, Wonder Women met and shared their stories, project hopes and ideas, read their poetry and exhibited paintings, while their children played and created in Microtopia. The occasional male friend or child attended, too. And adults could not resist taking part in the continual creation of Microtopia, adding a few new structures.

At the first meeting, Microtopia sponsored delicious lunch from a powerful woman micro-entrepreneur who has also been located at Liggett Terrace all summer -- Veronica's Kitchen. And the children who came with Wonder Women were so helpful at lunch, assisting in getting the orders in, and lending Veronica a hand.

The purpose of Wonder Women is, "A community of sisters far and wide that have come together to edify themselves, their communities, friends and family members that rely on their interaction." The group will explore venues and activities that provide moral and logistical support for women to actualize their ideas, create and participate in micro-economies, and to fulfill their vision of success for themselves, their families, and their communities. The third event, for example, will take place in Harlem where Wonder Woman Colette Belfour will present the work of a number of creative designers.
